A senior communications professional, Cate's skills range from strategic planning through to tactical delivery. She works well with people of all levels, is persuasive, tactful and stay calm in difficult situations, and have demonstrated this working at Board level and with Ministers. Cate's experience crosses communication disciplines, including media relations, public affairs and community engagement. She has led and managed productive teams, turning around poor performers, as well as creating cross-functional teams to deliver excellent results.

Key achievements include:

  • Successfully managed a team of more than 30 through a complex re-organisation process to realigned communications activity with the business.
  • Devised, planned and executed Network Rail’s communications for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games; this involved working with multiple stakeholders, managing a team of 100 people and advising the company’s executive team. This resulted in excellent execution of communications over the Games’ period as well as raising the company’s profile and brand in London.
  • Implementing the best practice from the Olympic Games in future railway communications, including contributing to the board tasked with improving transport information for all London commuters.
  • Managed a number of high profile incidents in the media, including the fuel crisis of 2000, the foot and mouth outbreak of 2001, the Potters Bar and Hatfield rail crashes and the taking of Railtrack into administration.
  • Handling the relationships with the bereaved relatives from a number of rail crashes and the Marchioness disaster. Cate's calm, informed approach and the ability to adapt quickly to a volatile situation allowed difficult messages to be delivered.
